In highway construction, waterproofing is the practice of covering concrete surfaces with a layer designed to keep water from seeping into the concrete. This waterproofing layer is often a multi-layer membrane which is embedded between the concrete and paving layers of the road. In building construction, waterproofing layers are used to cover concrete slabs for the same reason.
